Car Songs

Although school has started, we spent two weeks in August on vacation which prompted this post.  Long drives can be boring, and though electronics like movie watching can take up a large chunk of the drive, they do nothing to stimulate the brain.  Music plays a big part in our lives.  My teenagers are usually plugged into MP3 players but the little ones begin to moan after an hour in the car.  This is a great time to bring out your repertoire of children’s songs.  According to an article in The Guardian, “Singing traditional lullabies and nursery rhymes to babies… before they learn to speak, is an essential precursor to later educational success and emotional wellbeing”, says author Sally Blythe in her book The Genius of Natural Childhood. “Song is a special type of speech,”  research shows that music and rhyme increase a child’s ability in spatial reasoning, which can enhance a child’s mathematical and scientific abilities.

Some of our favorite children’s songs:

Wheels on the bus

Little Red Caboose

I’ve Been Working on the Railroad

This Old Man

It’s Raining Its Pouring

Row Row Row Your Boat

Down By the Bay

Teddy Bears Picnic

Farmer in the Dell

Pop Goes the Weasel

Are You Sleeping?

Mary Had A Little Lamb

Old MacDonald had a Farm

Thought I’d post a few of my favorite children’s authors.  I grew up reading Mother Goose so I an affinity for rhyme.  Also, these authors are also the illustrators, double talented…

Nancy Shaw- Sheep series, Sheep in a Jeep; Sheep out to Eat… these are clever, rollicking rhyme stories with colorful illustrations.

Sandra Boynton board books, she’s prolific.  Cute, cute, cute.  Witty stories from Horns to Toes, Going to Bed, But Not the Elephant and tons more. With lovable animal illustrations.

Iza Trapani illustrates a re-telling of children’s classics i.e. Twinkle Star, Little Teapot…

John Butler, While You Were Sleeping, a darling bedtime story and sweet illustrations, to read again and again.
